I am a 62 year old, Victoria born and raised here. I am a beginner painter who started almost 3 years ago. I primarily paint with acrylic paint and have used many other elements to my paintings. My focus is on colour and what it does for me. Ii love doing mountains and trees, abstract…Lastly, I am also doing wire sculptures and I am recently into clay sculpting. Ed Araquel was already a first prize winner while a student at Art Instruction School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One of his paintings was chosen for the school’s permanent collection. He further studied and attended workshops and seminars under two of America’s foremost portrait painters – John Howard Sanden and Daniel Greene. He also studied watercolours under Zoltan Szabo. In 1969 Ed Araquel established his own art & sign studio where he designed and produced award-winning displays and exhibits. He also taught commercial art and signwriting at Mohawk College. He joined Consolidated Bathurst Packaging Ltd as art Supervisor in 1976 and remained there until 1991. Ed Araquel has won several awards in almost all media – oils, watercolours and pastels, in various subjects – portraits, still-lifes and landscapes. In the 2002 Sooke Fine Arts Juried Show, he won the Best from Sooke Award, and the Jurors Choice Award and the Jurors Choice Award. Again in 2004, he won the Jurors Choice Award. Ed now lives in Victoria, BC and paints the places and faces of Southern Vancouver Island and also conducts workshops in portraits, watercolours and calligraphy. His paintings are in many galleries around Vancouver Island and Ontario.

Linda Anne Baker's work is inspired by the extraordinary beauty seen in the world around us. Loss, the passage of time, transformation and the ephemeral nature of life are themes she finds deeply moving. These subjects naturally lend themselves to treatments involving ambiguity, suggestion and symbolism. Evocative images connect people with nature in a way that she hopes highlights the need for preserving the natural world and its creatures. Winner of multiple awards in many national and international competitions, Linda's images have been published in numerous magazines and in three books. Her curiosity and drive to create have led her down many artistic paths including Chinese brush painting, printmaking, collage, fibre art, photography and watercolour. Her work is available in the form of cards, card packs, art journals, matted prints, framed prints and monotypes on cradle board. She also makes tiny haiku book necklaces, with one haiku by a traditional Japanese haiku poet in each one. Since moving to Victoria in 2005, Linda has participated in the Sooke Fine Arts Show; Moss Street Paint-In; West Shore, West Saanich and Scattered Artists Studio Tours; and shows in the Massey Gallery of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria as well as in numerous other locations in the Victoria area. She has also been in three shows at the ArtSea Gallery in Sidney and her work was on display at the Coast Collective from 2009-16. Currently, she is a member of the Arts and Culture Colwood Society and the Scattered Artists group; her work is available at the Goldfinch Arts Centre gift shop and is also shown at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre Art Space.

Randy Barron is a Victoria based mixed media artist that is creating nature themed designs using formed copper, vitreous enamel, and soft glass. Growing up in Victoria a mostly self- taught artist got his start through classes in metal and art at local schools practicing skills at his childhood home. Retiring in 2019, he had the opportunity to move back to Vancouver Island and pursue art on a full-time basis. A well-equipped studio capable of metal casting, kiln fired enamels, lampworking stations, metal polishing and buffing, desktop CNC, mig, tig, oxygen, acetylene propane welding are all disciplines he uses and still experiments with everyday. Featured techniques include Vitreous Enamel – Plique a Jour, Lampworking, Metal forming and casting and powder coating. Bases are triple black epoxy on black walnut. Originally from Montreal, the Laurentian mountains ignited my passion for nature, seascapes and landscapes. My studies and career in forestry and science, both in Canada and abroad, have enabled me to blend my love of forests, plants, wildlife and the outdoors with my enthusiasm for art. Victoria has been my home for over 30 years, and its lush landscapes and seascapes have inspired my paintings, and my passion for hiking, biking, kayaking and travel are also reflected in my art. Drawing and painting carry me away to a quiet world of solitude and joy. My current art is focused on watercolour and life drawing, but I have worked in pen and ink as well as acrylics. I have fun with artists from the Metchosin ArtPod, Studio 30, the Cordova Bay Art Group, and SPAC. I am a self taught artist and would classify my style as abstract/impressionism. My work is characterized by bold brush and palette knife work, dynamic colour, and a loose, intuitive approach. My subjects are varied, but more often are depictions of nature; landscapes, florals and seascapes. Not seeking to perfectly render a scene or capture exact detail, but rather to capture the feeling and emotion. At the same time I’m chasing beauty. I like to start a painting with no intention or plan, laying down colours, shapes and lines, responding in the moment. I will add layers, scrapping into the paint, until I start to see something take shape. Often a landscape, sometimes a floral emerges. This is when I get excited and start to pull the image up from the canvas, still trying not to think too much and allow it to flow without force. Art and the journey of creating reflects the journey of life. For me it’s about trust. Learning to trust and accept what is and being fully in the moment, authentic and honest. It’s not even about the final result, (although it’s lovely when I create something I love), for me it’s really about the bravery it takes to face a blank canvas, overcome my fear, and just paint.

After a long and rewarding career in interior design, I turned my attention to painting. At first, I worked with water-based oils and acrylics but gradually began working with conventional oil paints. As a designer, I had spent my whole career drawing, drafting, and painting in watercolours but did not have experience with oil paint. I eventually started taking cast drawing classes with Victoria based teacher Noah Layne, where I learned many skills. Cast drawing led to still life painting, which I really enjoy. I love seeing the objects in my “set up” come to life under my brush. I also love to experiment with colour texture in abstract painting. All of my learning and experimenting contributes to the great variety in my styles of art. I also bring inspiration from my travels to be studio. Recently, I was able to spend a week in Porte-du-Quercy, France with noted still life painter Stefaan Eykmans. Currently, I am working on a series of paintings based on the beauty found in the South of France. This is a fresh new direction for me to explore and one that I hope will lead me back to the French countryside.

I painted as a child with watercolours at a very early age as my Grandmother was an artist. I continued as a teenager but stopped as an adult as business and children took up all my time. Sam L Boehner, BSc, CSPWC, AFCA, Past President CSPWC Sam began painting in watercolour in 2007 as a way to work through depression and anxiety. Since then, her career with watercolour has taken her work worldwide including many exhibitions in Canada, and others in the US, Mexico, France, and Italy. Sam has been passionate about watercolour since the moment she picked up a brush. Her career also included many years of teaching the medium to hundreds of students. Upon reflection, after her tenure in 2023, as President with CSPWC; the oldest watercolour society in Canada with its roots in the 'Group of Seven', and celebrating its 100th year in 2025; Sam has pivoted from painting for Galleries and Exhibitions to answer a call to give back. Backstory: Sam's start in watercolour came as a result of childhood trauma. In 2007, after a bout of longing, and searching for answers due to a break of her mental wellness, she warmly describes the encounter as 'watercolour found me'. Sam's recovery included the medium of watercolour that soon became a refuge. Present: Sam recently launched her beta program with great success. She is pivoting her art career to give back to the community and inspire others to find healing and their creative voice. Sam is the creator and facilitator of Artful Healing online. A way for women to work through childhood trauma, using Art as therapy. She continues to paint for small exhibitions in her home studio space and mainly paints mediatively for somatic release and emotional regulation. Despite being an avid creator her entire life, Caroline came to art as a formal study relatively late. Her voracious appetite for knowledge has pushed her to study such diverse subjects as anthropology, chemistry, fibre arts, dance, and wellness. She's lived or worked in eight provinces and two territories and has explored mediums ranging from pastels and charcoal to watercolour and oil, and even explored block printing and sculpture. In art, Caroline aims to portray the essence of a subject in the medium best suited to represent it. My interest in art started in high school and I continued with my studies of art Sheridan College. For many years I worked as an Artist, Art Director, Illustrator and teacher in the Toronto area. My passion for fine art has been ongoing studying art during night classes, or life drawing sessions. Also, I attended many workshops with the Society of York Region Artists while living in Aurora, Ontario. As a member of SOYRA I was able to show my work with the Society of York Region Artist Showcase, Juried Art Shows, and shows with the Town of Aurora in Association with SOYRA, working mainly in Acrylic, and with the Pine Tree Pottery Guild. A few years ago I started working with pastel and oil, and just received my Signature Status with Pastel Artists Canada. Since moving to British Columbia I have been experimenting in pastel and oils and continued with my studies through online workshops and mentorships.

After a lengthy “pre-art” career that saw me working all over Canada and USA, I moved to beautiful Salt Spring Island on the west coast of Canada in 2015 to begin my second life as an artist, woodworker and person of leisure. The Salt Spring Island era came to an end in the spring of 2023, when my wife Christine and I, our dog Bailey and our cat Bella, moved to beautiful Sidney by the Sea. I have now run out of excuses why I cannot focus on my art without interruption. I have no formal art training but have subjected myself to a number of workshops and classes over the last five years from many talented artists in many beautiful places. I work in oils and focus primarily on portraiture, figurative work and still life but from time to time I throw in a few other things that strike my imagination. Claire Christinel AFCA Fine Paintings in Oils or Acrylics Hello, I am a representational artist of still life and west coast landscapes. My paintings are inspired largely by the quality of light and shadow in a scene, which bring them to life and create beauty, mood and drama. Kathryn Compton is an award-winning Canadian artist who works in both oils and watercolour. Originally devoted to watercolour, she became captivated by the depth and flexibility of oil painting a few years ago and has been joyfully immersed in the medium ever since. She is especially fascinated by the way light and dark can be manipulated with oils, and she considers each new work an opportunity to push her skills further. While Kathryn chooses her subjects intuitively, she is often drawn to those that present a challenge. Portraiture has become a particular passion, and in recent years she has completed a growing number of commissioned works. My work has been informed by early studies in Fine Art History and Anthropology, at UBC, by teaching Art and Applied Design, through extensive travel , by study in workshops with fine teachers and finally and perhaps most influentially, by observations in nature, both through a camera and with the naked eye. Presently, I am working in two mediums: polymer clay and paper. I am using polymer clay in a practice of jewelry design and am most attentive to shape, colour, texture, dimension and of course, wearability. The medium of polymer clay is without a match in flexibility and malleability to achieve a product expressive of those. When working with paper, I focus on shape, edge, texture and dimension. Text is sometimes incorporated as well. Combining iron oxide with tannic acid can lead to unanticipated results worth keeping and optimizing with other media. I have shown and sold locally and abroad, notably here in Victoria at the Victoria Art Gallery Shop, the Sooke Fine Arts show, The Gallery at Mattick's Farm, at the SPAC Spring Show and to personal buyers.

I was born in 1959, and spent my first few years in the prairie lands of western Canada. Whether through music, painting, photography or cartooning, I’ve expressed my imagination with enthusiasm and, most importantly, humour. I’ve studied both fine art and commercial art in Ottawa. After graduation, I joined the fast-paced world of advertising as a Graphic Designer and then Art Director, in Ottawa. Very soon, finding myself drawn back toward the west. Packing up my guitar, paints, brushes and drawing board, I headed headed west to Vancouver. Now peacefully settled in beautiful Victoria with my wife Joanne and our pups, I’ve made my living as a Graphic Designer, while continuing to fulfill my creative soul through my personal water colour art. The wild, rocky west coast of Canada inspires me. The sheltered islets and bays of the Gulf Islands – to the misty, storm-tossed sands of Long Beach on the west side of Vancouver Island. As I’ve always called BC’s coastal islands home I have deep affection for the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest with their endlessly varied combinations of mountains, ocean, islands and trees. Painting, in both oils and acrylics, helps me see this distinctive world a bit differently. Constantly changing light and colour shapes — and reshapes – familiar vistas. And the delicate lacework of sandstone, the contorted trunks of Arbutus, the infinite rhythms of tide and current, the strength of mountains beg to be captured on canvas. I work in both oils and acrylics and enjoy their differences. Oils demand care — and reward me with soft edges, muted colours, rich tones. Acrylics permit a degree of spontaneity that adds fun to the process and allows for constant adjustment until composition and colour are somehow right. For the most part I work in the studio, often using photographs that I’ve taken as a starting point. And I enjoy participating in workshops and meeting artists as they always introduce new ways of capturing moments in time. Lately I’ve been playing with palette knives as a means of being more impulsive in capturing nuances of shape, colour and light. Among the recurrent themes in my paintings are Arbutus trees with their improbable structures, colours, and ways they frame the landscape. It is challenging to use paint to capture their distinctive dimensionality and the textures and contrasts of their bark. Another theme is Mt Baker, which has been on the horizon of almost all my homes in British Columbia.

Aviv is 29, has Down Syndrome and diabetes type 1, as well as an unknown bone disease. She is shy and incredibly focused on her Art, which she has been creating for about 17 years. Her theme of hearts and flowers repeats itself in her Folk Art style 'OUTSIDER ART'. Aviv works several hours daily on her needlepoint, acrylics, weaving or multimedia. She has shown her work in many local Galleries and had 3 solo shows at the Spiral Cafe in Vic West, a Solo Show at Xchanges Gallery, a Solo Show at Arc.hive, and a Solo Show at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre Main Gallery. Three images of Aviv's work where purchased by the City of Victoria and displayed downtown as giant Bus Shelter Posters for the year of 2019. Warner Bros purchased 28 originals for use in filming the Netflix series MAID and UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN. Easter Seals has used her designs on their Xmas cards and commissioned a painting of Camp Shawnigan for Premier Eby. Aviv sells 5×7 photo Art Cards with images of her artwork (from 700+ pieces) and does custom orders. Aviv lives with her parents on a farm in Brentwood Bay and will be opening her Gallery there in Spring 2025. Aviv's goal is to be recognized as a serious Artist and to spread Peace and Happiness with her Art, she sincerely wants to have a positive effect on the world !

My art is primarily of realistic birds and nature, painted in acrylics and watercolours. I usually work on small size canvases, appropriate for the subject matter (e.g. hummingbirds) but also do landscapes and florals on larger boards. In 2023 I received a Juror’s Choice award at the SPAC show for an acrylic rendering of snowdrops in early spring. Before moving to North Saanich, I spent 25 years practicing law in Edmonton and was privileged to sit on the Boards of several large companies and to serve as Chair of the Board of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). In 2011 my husband, Timothy Christian, who is also a lawyer, (and now a writer: TimothyJChristian.com) and I were bicycling in France. While drinking a lovely bottle of local wine in the countryside, we decided to retire from law and to explore new directions in our lives. Having been a lover of art, and a collector, I took to painting with a passion – taking classes on line and attending classes at Vancouver Island School of Art, learning to express, on canvas, my love of colour and form. I have traveled extensively and what interests me most is the people – their culture, way of life, appearance and how they express themselves through their clothing, art and architecture. The same is true of the time I spent working with Indigenous people in northern Alberta and in the NWT. When I reflect and draw on these experiences to paint it's all about creating a feeling, one that reflects a particular people and how they live, or something beautiful or powerful I’ve seen in nature, and that feeling comes from the combination and flow of colour and texture on the canvas. I use acrylics, gels and sometimes a heavier textural element like plaster to create paintings with a complex layering of colours and texture, generally applied with a palette knife or silk screening tool to layer or subtract the paint from the canvas.

I retired from St. Michaels University School in 2015 where I was Head of Visual Art. I taught there for 28 years, both in the Junior and Senior Schools, and among my teaching responsibilities were the delivery of AP Studio Art and AP Art History. The latter is a particular interest of mine, and I was involved in giving many workshops to teachers over the years. I worked with galleries such as the Seattle Art Museum, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC and the Art Gallery Of Greater Victoria, sharing ideas as to how to incorporate artworks in the gallery into the curriculum in an engaging way. After retirement, I worked as a docent for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and also as a curriculum supervisor for emerging teachers at the University of Victoria. I have a degree in Fine Arts ( Scotland) and also a Bachelor of Education ( University of Victoria). Currently, I am committed to developing and expanding my own painting. I work in acrylics and oils, and have been exploring portraiture as well as still life and landscape, but I do find I am drawn most frequently to the figurative. I have taken several courses locally and am always inspired to learn more. I find that my own artistic journey is just beginning, despite having been involved with the arts for many years and in many ways this is a very exciting period of my life.

I am a senior who has been painting most of my adult life with various mediums. I have taken several workshops in developing my skills in oil/cold wax medium. Gillian began woodcarving during long deployments at sea with the Royal Canadian Navy. Now a veteran after 31 years of service, she is the owner and craftswoman of O'Malley's Carpentry Shop and Celtic Art, making fun, funky and useful wood art, cutting boards, charcuterie boards, spoons, nautical decor, celtic-inspired wood carving. All products with the exception of exotic wood accents in cutting boards are made from local wood and all the celtic animal woodcarvings are handcarved and based on her original designs. A life-long art learner, Shelley has completed courses in photography, sculpture, life drawing and painting. She is a former music teacher and sings in a classical choir in Victoria, BC. She has been painting since 2018, and while the subject matter changes, her free flowing, intuitive, colourful style has remained a constant. Shelley paints mostly in acrylic, but adds collage, pastel, and oil stick. She paints in the silence of her home studio with some of Victoria’s best coffee at hand. She is inspired by street art, nature, and simply beautiful things like the colour of a stormy sky or the droop of a tulip. She has painted fantastical creatures, melting polar mountains, and flowers just a bit beyond their prime. Lately she has been fascinated, and ‘drawn to’ the abstracted shapes formed by trees while she is out hiking with her dog, or even just gardening in her yard. Since 2023, Shelley has been encouraged and delighted to be awarded three Juror’s Choice Awards for her landscape paintings at the SPAC Spring Shows.

Adrienne's artistic journey traces back to her childhood, where her innate creativity found expression through various mediums. She draws her inspiration from growing up on the prairies, the scenic beauty of Vancouver Island (where she’s lived for the past 20 years), her travels, and often her imagination. Whether going from a memory or looking at a photo, most of her creations start with a very quick line drawing. Usually, she’ll translate a small amount of that directly onto the canvas. I am a photographer, printmaker and mixed media artist. My creative exploration started with formal training in photography. I quickly needed to push the creative envelope and sought to combine photography with other mediums. That exploration led me to a passion for the wonderful versatility and unpredictability of encaustic painting (hot wax, damar resin and a blow torch) where I often combined photography or other collage elements, always working in layers. I continue to explore. My current work generally starts with water-based media and often incorporates collage elements, including photography, digital art and paper I have handprinted or painted. My process often cycles back to my love for wax, now cold wax and oil. Still working in layers, obscuring then revealing / waxing and waning, I continue to explore the interplay of light and colour.

David studied sculpture at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design in London, UK. After graduating, he trained as a teacher of Art and Design. David was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. He also exhibited at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester at the New Contemporaries show and had sculptures sited at the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park. David emigrated to Canada in 2001. David specializes in teaching sculpture, completing commission pieces, and mold making and casting. He formally taught sculpture at Brentwood College in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island. He also taught at Metchosin International School of the Arts in 2012 and also in 2014; Red Deer College in 2016; and in Pietrasanta, Italy each summer as part of the Sculpt Italy experience ( 2013 to present) In 2009-2010 David was commissioned to work on the Blue Whale project for University of British Columbia. In 2012, David worked as artist-in-residence at the Gitskan Art Centre in Hazelton, teaching First Nation carvers how to mold and cast their artifacts, including an 8ft totem. In the Fall of 2017, David also completed molding and casting another major First Nation public sculpture which will be installed at Fraser Valley University. His work displayed in Preso Museo Ugo Guidi in Forte del Marmi, Italy, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Michelangelo, as well as the 2018 Levigliani Wine Festival. In 2022, he was invited to sculpt at Fivizzano symposium,Tuscany and has his sculpture ‘Spirit of Fivizzano’ as part of their permenant collection. David’s sculptures are located in many private and public collections in The UK; Australia; Germany and Canada. Some of David’s public sculptures are on display at the Sidney Sculpture walk; Oak Bay sculpture trail; Kingsbrae sculpture garden, NB, and the Castlegar Sculpture walk.

Sarah started painting at 14 using acrylic paints. She moved to the island in 2013 and slowly started to share her artwork with others. She had her first solo art exhibit in 2023, selling 13 paintings. Sarah is part of a couple local art groups and enters paintings whenever she can. She attends workshops to get motivation and meet other artists. Sarah has struggled with health issues her whole life and was recently diagnosed with ME/CFS and fibromialgia. She had to leave her job and go on disability. Artist Bio
Debra Kessler who now lives on Vancouver Island, in Beautiful British Columbia, Canada. She is an Métis Woman of Cree and European ancestry, originating from the historic Red River Settlement of Southern Manitoba, Canada. She was injured in a terrible farming accident in the Summer of 1999. In a matter of seconds her life was changed forever, some say she is lucky to have survived. Debra's accident resulted in several injuries including the loss of both arms above the elbow. Prior to her accident Debra created murals, drawings and paintings and she was a member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club. After a long recovery period and with much determination Debra relearned how to draw and paint by holding her tools in her mouth. In 2011 she joined the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists. Debra became an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She continues to pursue her great passion for painting the beauty in the world. Her dedication and perseverance to strive to improve her abilities and skill as an artist, led her to achieve a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Thompson Rivers University in 2018. A truly inspiring person who has encountered adversity in her life has become an inspiration to others. Debra has learned that creating art does not come from the hands but instead is created from the heart.

I have been drawing and painting since I was small, but a career in music education took me away from my art for quite awhile. Since retirement in 2011 I have rediscovered my love of creating art. My main focus is watercolour , watercolour and ink, and recently I have been doing some acrylic painting. I love variety but I do especially love to paint houses and buildings. We're a husband and wife team each with our own line of artisan crafts. Dean works with hardwoods to make a variety of items including herringbone jewelry boxes, charcuterie boards, butter spreaders, infinity salt boxes, candle holders and boxes with inlay and intarsia designs on the lids. Customers receive a padded bag to protect their box while they get it home. Krys works with fabric and leather to fashion a variety of ladies' bags including crossbody smart bags, tartan aberdeen bags, denim patch bags, knitting bags, travel bags, and bags with theme designs such as dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and boats. All bags are interfaced and have upscale linings with specialty pockets and key clips. Many have adjustable straps. Barbara Kopeschny, originally from Ontario, is a self-taught realist artist, now residing in Victoria, British Columbia. Inspired by rocky landscapes, granite cliffs and water views, her paintings often incorporate delicate birdlife and nature. I am Ukrainian, born in Odessa, a city in Ukraine on the Black Sea coast. I came to Canada, to the city of Victoria in February 2023 because of the war in my native Ukraine. I love to paint with watercolors, I am inspired by beautiful nature: wonderful landscapes, the sea, flowers. Six months ago I became interested in creating dolls from fabric. Creativity helps me overcome the stress associated with the events in Ukraine. I like it when a character, a personality with its own unique character and features appears from ordinary pieces of fabric. My textile dolls are handmade, the body, clothes, shoes are made of fabric, the hair is made of woolen threads, the body of the doll is filled with synthetic fluff. My love of glass as an art medium has extended over many decades. Since 2012, I have created fused or kiln-formed glass art myself. COLLAGES: As an artist who loves words and uses them strategically, I hope to distract the viewer from my search for meaning and persuade them to find their own. Mixed media collage is like building a story. With this technique, I bind, layer and distort imagery with shape, colour, and text, patiently allowing the form or message to unfold. I work on several pieces at a time, allowing ideas to overlap and relationships to form. SEASCAPES: As a craniosacral therapist, we learn to appreciate the early embryological dynamics as a fluid body within the amnionic ocean of the womb. In our teaching and practice, we witness and palpate the nuances of the tidal fluctuations of the adult body with neutrality allowing the inherent health and wisdom to reset and resurface. This inclination to return to our true nature is always within us.

I am a Victoria based watercolour, acrylic, oil and mixed media artist ( Wsanec Territory, Lekwungen Territory) , Jill Levere. Inspired by nature and encouraged by family, painting has become my passion in my retirement years. I love the engagement and the surprise in my eclectic approach and results. Painting on wood is a particular interest, from the smallest wood earrings pieces to larger old recycled boards, the wood as my canvas helps create its own story. I love colour and texture and continue to seek ways to use it in both bold and subtle ways. My grandchildren are a gift and inspire many of my realistic paintings. The joy they bring me inspire my more abstract pieces along with nature that also finds its way into my work. Acrylic, watercolour, mixed media and more recently oil painting are my mediums through which my soul finds its way to the canvas. Most recently, I have welcomed the addition of my own little studio by Elk Lake and it is where you most often find me, surrounded by nature and with visits from grandchildren.

I started painting in 2007 as a way to deal with stress. It soon became a way of life. I am a self-taught artist, However, my interest in painting has led me to take many different workshops and classes with local artists and institutions. Although I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and techniques, painting is my focus. I paint in acrylic, oil, or watercolor. I usually plan my compositions carefully while painting with oil or watercolor, mediums I use for landscapes or portraits. With acrylic, I am freer. I am a Canadian artist. I am a retired nurse, married with grandchildren. I have lived in BC since 1973. Such a beautiful place to live and explore. So many beautiful landscapes to paint! I am now a devoted full time artist. My works show elements of abstraction, an impressionistic style with a hint of realism. I work with oils, acrylics, watercolor and mixed media. I enjoy landscapes the most as well as still life. Creating art is exciting to me. In 2021 after getting my first easel I approached art with a passion and my soul was alive. Whether it’s on canvas, paper or wood panel, I feel art is a form of expression through one’s being. It evolves and shifts with what life brings each year, as I and those around me go through our life’s journeys. Art is a tool and fuel for the soul. Translating any moment in time with color, light and texture that can be shared with others is a joy. My goal is to let my paintings bring out what your journey is leading you to see and use it to inspire your being. Many of my paintings are also available as prints or on art cards that you can see on my web site. I am a member of the ACCS, SFAS, SPAC, AGGV, SACG, XChanges and MACC Galleries. Many of my paintings are painted plein air, outdoors on site. This is most enjoyable and I try to keep that up every week. Otherwise I am found in my studio creating new pieces of art. Originally from Montreal, I now live near the ocean in Victoria, BC. I am very much inspired by nature on my daily walks along the water and through the neighborhood and parks. My travels and living in Europe have provided rich artistic environments that have influenced my art over the years. My paintings range from semi-representational to abstract with a focus on acrylic abstract compositions. I have developed my skills and style of painting through participating in many classes and workshops. My artwork has been exhibited in shows in Vancouver, Victoria and area, and in online exhibitions. I have also enjoyed participating in community art walks and studio tours. I trained previously at the University of Calgary in Fine Arts and Art Eduction, but a career and family put my art practice on hold. Born and raised in Winnipeg, I moved to Vancouver in the mid 80’s, then to the Island 10 years later. Self-taught, I have always enjoyed creating all kinds of crafts and art, from a very young age. The last few years I’ve had a special interest in creating things from repurposed scrap wood and found items, such as grow charts and, during Covid, many fairy doors, thinking we all needed a wee bit of magic during such a difficult time. Vancouver Island based visual ARTIST, Janet McDonald, works primarily in oils. She loves the opacity, buttery feel and blend-ability of oils for her favourite subjects: “wildlife and people”! “To capture a moment, I start by blocking in my subject and then laying down a thick paste medium around it. Cindy McMath has been doing something creative for as long as she can remember: everything from stained glass to bad knitting. However, it was paint and paper that really stuck, with Cindy starting out creating small collages and mixed media work and eventually progressing to large abstract paintings. Cindy’s work hangs in private collections in the UK, US and Canada. Sophia Morrison studied fine art at the University of Calgary and the Alberta College of Art, Alberta, Canada. She taught design and pottery at the University of Calgary, taught art for the Calgary School Board, was instrumental in developing an art curriculum for Alberta junior high schools and gave workshops at community centers. A special merit award for designing art courses for community centers was presented to her by Alberta’s Minister of Culture. Melinda Neal is an accomplished artist and an Exhibiting Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her specialties include floral and marine subjects, and her work is frequently displayed at the Federation Gallery on Granville Island, Vancouver, and in FCA shows at the Fortune Gallery in Victoria. Melinda was born in London, UK, and grew up in Atlantic Canada in a family of artists and musicians. Her passion for painting developed early on, and she has explored various disciplines from pottery to painting. She now focuses exclusively on oil painting, which she finds to be a forgiving and versatile medium. She exhibits at various venues on the Southern Vancouver Island. These include the annual SPAC, (Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts) show, and the Sooke Fine Arts Show. She has also at been the Artist–in-residence at The Pier Hotel in Sidney, and she is the past Artsea/Coast Capital Art Display Lead. Art has been a passion for most of my life. I have always been fascinated by the effects of light on nature and how it affects the colours and mood of what it touches. As a teenager I spent hours sketching and playing with tonal values, and over 30 years ago was able to start painting seriously, taking classes and workshops with artists whose style and technique inspired me. Acrylics and Oils are my favourite mediums. Nature has always been my main source of inspiration, filtered through my feelings and life experiences. My academic training was in Communications, and that passion has continues to motivate me to express my love for nature, especially Canada’s rugged landscapes. My goal is to continue improving and evolving into a more introspective expression. There is nothing I love more than being in front of a canvas with rich colourful paints next to me and lots of ideas pouring into my brain. Through the years I have participated in many art exhibitions, including juried and solo shows in Ontario and in the past twelve years in Victoria, B.C. I am an active member of the Victoria Sketch Club, and the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria (CACGV). Many of my paintings are in private collections in different parts of Canada, the US, Europe, Mexico and Australia.

I was born in Duncan and raised in a small town named Sooke, on Vancouver Island. Work opportunities brought me to the lower mainland and Vancouver area. It was there, I began to study First Nations cultures, Anthropology and Archeology, at Douglas College; however, after seeing the cave art from “The Cave of Lascaux, Magdalenian. France,” I switched my studies to Art, with a specialty in Pottery, at Kwantlen College. Since then, I have pursued my passion for pottery and art by taking numerous courses, participating in 4 different pottery guilds, and numerous sales and shows. After finishing a full time career in the customer service and the business world, I traveled before deciding to pursue my dedication to pottery. Currently, I have a small studio in Colwood on Vancouver Island. I maintain a functional line of table ware, and most recently, I am launching a line of culturally inspired Art, which I call ‘Wild Salmon Ocean’ highlighting the plight of our west coast wild salmon, as they fight to maintain their territory against invasive species, fish farms and disease. I also produce Coast Salish culturally inspired Art items, in clay. My wall hangings are expressions of “First Nation’s Coppers”; they represent an ancient tradition of holding and sharing power with others; my Salish Feast bowls celebrate the many ceremonies and feasts of the Salish Culture. I have been working on a mentorship with the late great Salish Artist: Charles Elliott. I am one of those souls who needs to create. When I'm not creating there's a nagging force in my body that doesn't stop until I address it. Several years ago I was diagnosed with MS. Eventually it took the fine motor skills in my right hand. But rather than give up or give in, I decided to start using my left hand. Now I am mainly left handed. 2017 is when I really started painting. In high school I preferred drawing in pencil and ink. I have taken some lessons online and in person locally. I've been painting for over 50 years, and have enjoyed innumerable art classed over the years, also branching into Stained Glass when I lived in Toronto and had suitable space for that medium. In Calgary, I took classes with Barbara Milne and David More, which helped me develop my technique. In the years I lived in Alberta, my work was carried (sequentially) in 3 different galleries and twice, one of my landscapes was featured in Calgary's Artwalk promotion. I have taught landscape painting and negative space watercolours in Cochrane, Alberta for a number of years and held a workshop on 'Painting the Landscape' at Royal Roads University the summer of 2011. In 2013, I facilitated a community 'paint-in' in Kispiox, organized by SWCC and with community volunteers, including Roy Henry Vickers, who was our guest speaker. It was held in support of the those First Nations and other groups who were trying to stop the mining of Mount Klappan, which would have polluted several salmon-bearing rivers. As a follow-up, with many supporters, I recruited artists for a month-long show at the community gallery in Whistler, for public education and sale in support of the Tahltan who were waging a fight to save the environment in a number of ways. I learned that organizing is not one of my skills! :-) That said, I do see a connection between art and raising awareness and have done an oil painting in support of Ukraine. Since moving to the Saanich Peninsula, and influenced by COVID and other events, I have not been as active in painting as I would like to be. Joining Studio 30 has been a big help— what a fine community of artists! — and I participated in the recent Studio 30 art show at ArtSea. For the last year, I've been painting the forest near Beaver Lake, which is within walking distance from my home. Recently, I've been experimenting with mixed media: watercolour and pastels

Lynn has been creating visual art since she was a child; drawing, painting, photography and ceramics. In her 30's she decided to pursue Architecture and in 1990 she graduated from the 5 year Professional Degree program. After a career in architectural design she became interested in Cohousing Design and completed a Masters in Architectural Studies. After teaching, working in Green Building and moving into cohousing, Lynn returned to her roots in drawing and painting. Currently she is focused on exploring the potential of watercolours and acrylic painting to express her deep connection with nature, and the transformative power of painting. Always doodling, drawing and creating led to acrylics. High school art teacher said, "good thing you are taking science!". I took that as a challenge and spent more time taking courses and learning in my spare time, while raising and training German Shepherds, raising a family and working as as an Explosives/ Chemical/ Engineering Technologist at the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory in Ottawa . When I moved to Victoria in 2014 (bringing 80 lbs. of Stained Glass plus the tools with me) I took up pottery at Greenglade Community Centre, Lapidary at the Shoal Centre in Sidney, and Watercolors, Woodworking, Carving, Sculpture and Silver-Smithing at the Juan de Fuca Sr. Centre in Colwood. I joined SPAC in 2017 and have been on the board twice as Membership Chair. I added "Painting on Silk" to my repertoire recently and am thoroughly enjoying the journey. Although I continue to work on watercolors, I took a second sculpture coourse in Italy and am presently taking another sculpture course on the weekends. I havee so many ideas in my head and look forward to a busy and exciting year.

I began painting at 35 years old, I am now 94 years old. I live on my own. I trained as an art therapist and worked in the field for 30 years. I still supervise and offer training online. I use all art materials in my studio, depending on the subject that inspires me. I paint with aquarelle, oils, acrylic, and create with collage. From 1985 to 2001 I belonged to Le Cercle des Artistes Peintres du Quebec, showed my work in Montreal and internationally and won several prizes at their galas. Then I moved to Victoria. I am a Board member and an Exhibiting member of FCA. I am a member of the Victoria Arts Council and the Victoria Art Gallery. I have had major exhibitions at the Cedar Hill Gallery and at the Grand Gallery of the McTavish Art Institute. My work is on display at the Tillicum Mall . I teach Art for Wellbeing at Silver Threads on Quadra Street in Victoria. I volunteer at the Memory Cafe several times a year. I am an artist who is a photographer, painter and a potter. At the moment, I am making functional tableware using thrown and slab techniques. As a self taught ceramicist I have my own studio where I make my own glazes. The entire pottery making process from design to chemistry is remarkably engaging for me. My Chroma series of abstract landscape photography which look like paintings has enjoyed a two person exhibtion. I am planning to start on a large acrylic painting for my home. Since 2004, Linda Rajotte has been creating her west coast inspired wearable art. She weaves, textures and forms silver to make individual, unique pieces. The ocean and the symmetry of nature provide inspiration for her. Arden Rose, born to a couple with roots from France and Finland, was raised in a nurturing and creative environment that instilled a deep appreciation for the natural world. Today, she calls Victoria, BC her home, where she finds endless inspiration in the stunning natural landscapes that surround her. Arden Rose's current artistic focus is on exploring the profound connection between humanity and the environment, emphasizing the idea that we are never truly isolated from the natural world. She believes that we are, in essence, an intricate mirror of the natural world, constantly reflecting and refracting one another's essence. Through her art, she hopes to serve as a visual ode to the unquestionable truth that we are all undeniably connected. Rose currently shows her work at The Tofino Gallery of Contemporary Art, owns the Fairfield Art Studio, and has been Artist in Residence in numerous locations in Victoria and will be undertaking her third Artist Residency in France in May 2025.

Diana Sanderson has spent the last 40 years indulging her fascination with the inherent qualities of silk by dyeing and weaving it to create distinctive garments and accessories. The Silk Weaving Studio on Granville Island in Vancouver has been the centre of her exploration, providing a space that inspires her and creates an environment for exploration of the natural characteristics of the fibre for her fellow weavers and the public alike. Her journey has seen a fascination with the two dimensional marriage between colour and silk progress into what is now a four dimensional exploration of how silk can display colour, structure and texture. She continues to indulge and develop her love of colour through the complex multiple dye processes she has developed over the years. Diana moves back and forth between simple and complex weave structures incorporating a myriad of silk yarns and blends made available through her companion business Sanjo Silk Ltd. Salt Spring Island is now Diana’s home and it is in her studio here that she has continued her exploration of natural materials but now branching out into naturally dyed three dimensional work, still using silk but adding gut, wire and other structural materials like branches, twigs and vines. These new materials and forms are offering her endless fascination and challenges as she endeavours to combine them in ways that highlight their inherent characteristics.

Grant served 37 years as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), flying primarily Search and Rescue helicopters. He was the Commanding Officer of both 103 Squadron in Gander, Newfoundland and later 442 Squadron in Comox, BC. Retiring from the RCAF in 2011 at the rank of Colonel, Grant then took up painting as hobby. He was honoured by having work displayed on the cover of Air Force magazine twice and has sold a number of paintings on Vancouver Island where he and his wife Terry now reside. Landscapes, seascapes and the occasional helicopter are the subjects he most enjoys painting.

Tim is from Victoria, BC. and is a member of the local “Island Woodturners Guild”. After retiring from a career in “oceanography”, he was able to spend many hours in his shop developing and exploring his passion for “Woodturning”. He draws his inspiration from coastal, marine, geometric and symmetrical patterns by simply walking a long a beach. Led by instinct he creates turnings that have wonderful shape, form, texture and patterns. He has created functional items such as bowls but he also has been inspired to create purely artistic and decorative pieces that have surface decoration, texturing and embellishments. All of Tim's turnings have a wonderful finish and feel in your hand. Tim, works mostly with local woods like Maple, Arbutus and fruit trees. He loves burls, and other woods with extravagant grain patterns. The use of green wood and allowing it to warp as it dries is often used in many of his turned pieces. The challenge of creating, the possibilities of shape and techniques, the meeting of other artists and meeting new people continue to fuel Tim's enthusiasm for the world of woodturning.

I am a Signature Member (AFCA) of the Federation of Canadian Artists and serve on the Executive of the local FCA Chapter. Born and raised in Manitoba, I began my lifelong love of painting at an early age at the Art Gallery of Western Manitoba. I had encouragement from teachers throughout school, and graduated from Brandon University Faculty of Education with an emphasis on Art Education. I taught Art in small-town Manitoba, eventually discovering clay which became my singular focus for 30 years. In 1989 I moved to Chemainus on Vancouver Island where a group of 7 potters opened The Pottery Store, where I was managing partner. In 2007 I felt the strong pull of my MUSE and got back into painting. I paint mainly in acrylics, occasionally oil. My subject matter is varied…often rocks, seascapes, landscapes, sometimes still life, and occasionally figurative work. I have been living in Greater Victoria since 2011, close to my children and grandson, enjoying all that Vancouver Island has to offer…including winning tournaments of snooker and billiards. My artworks can be found in the collections of art lovers across Canada and into the US. I participate in Artist Residencies in the major hotels in downtown Victoria and in Federation Shows.

Jessica Stein grew up in the Okanagan on tales of lake monsters and ghost trains. She moved to the Island to study at UVic, and fell in love with the culture and landscape, and decided to stay. Jessica has decided to channel her love of the beauty of nature, as well as the whimsical, fantastical, and romantic, into her jewellery designs, and more recently into hand-painted glassware. In her jewellery, Jessica loves working with seed beads and creating intricate designs, weaving in colours and textures. She also loves working with pearls, either glass or freshwater, and with wire and sea glass. All of her sea glass was collected on beaches around southern Vancouver Island. Sea glass is a delight to work with because each piece has a unique shape and it's lots of fun to play with the wire and see how the wrap evolves to suit it. Jessica enjoys bringing that same love of colour and texture to her hand-painted functional glassware. She loves the transparency of glass paints, and how the light is able to shine through and make the colours luminous. Jessica has participated in a number of venues and exhibitions, including the Excellence in Crafts Pop-Up Gallery put on by the Island Artisans Association in the summer of 2013, local markets and crafts fairs, the gift shop at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, and the gift shop at the Coast Collective Art Centre, and the gift shop at the Goldfinch Arts and Culture Centre. She has also been part of a two-woman gallery exhibition: Blown Ashore – Beach Treasures and Fine Feathers with Elaine Morton in 2019.

I have always enjoyed art and have tried my hand at a variety of crafts as well as painting in watercolour and acrylic. After retiring and moving to the Saanich Peninsula in 2017 I had the time to pursue my love of creating. During the Covid lockdown I took numerous online art courses and found that I love the abstract process. I’ve always enjoyed painting and trying all sorts of crafts but, being a working mum and then running my own little business, I didn’t really have much free time. In 2017, I officially retired and moved to Victoria, actually Central Saanich, on the Peninsula where there are lakes and beaches just minutes from me…I even got a little dog to enjoy the walks with. I’ve met so many nice people and have made some great new friends here with whom I can share my interest in the arts. I continue to practice working in acrylic, watercolour and mixed media on my own and from attending numerous workshops, courses and artist retreats. I’ve also had several show at our local community ArtSea Gallery and showed my work at the SPAC Spring art show at Mary Winspear. I am so fortunate to now have the time to explore my own creativity and have found so much joy in it. I’ve sold several pieces of my work which has made me feel that I’m on the right track.

Tamar Swartz is a visual artist, currently working in acrylic paint and mixed media. Creating has always been a part of Linda’s life. From a very early age she has built, stitched, painted and drawn! She is mainly self taught but has taken several courses over the years from a variety of artists, exploring a variety of mediums. Large acrylics have been her preference since moving to the coast sixteen years ago from an area close to the Rocky Mountains. To her, mountains, prairies and the sea all have their own unique beauty. She works mainly from photos using some of her own but is also drawn to other’s photos where a moment in time captures one’s imagination. Light and darkness draw her in and that is where the process of interpreting on canvas begins. Inspired by her Canadian home, Jacqueline Vetsch's artwork is based on her recent move to Victoria B.C., roots in Alberta, and extensive travel. Jacqueline has had a long-term interest in "places and spaces", with employment as a Land Planner and Instructor in Environmental Science. She is a native Calgarian whose initial playground was the transition between prairie and mountains. One of her recent pieces, "Alberta Wild Rose" reflects her personality, a flower that is hardy, delicate and beautiful, informal compared to the manicured garden variety, with a few imperfect prickly parts! Jacqueline's painting experience goes back to childhood when she took art lessons in pastels and oils followed by courses in drawing and painting during university. She has continued painting through adulthood for leisure using watercolours and acrylic mediums. Her subject matter is varied including still life, flowers, mountain and coastal scenes and playful animals.

I'm an Artist located in Brentwood Bay. I started out mostly dotted on rocks (both man made from moulds as well as beach rocks) using acrylics but have also dotted on wood, glass, seashells and sand dollars. In 2024 I added Zentangle to my portfolio and have incorporated this into some of my work. I've since also added mixed media collage and taken workshops and other courses to further expand on this art journey I’ve been on for close to 6 years now. I’ve been fortunate to have sold my work across North America and Internationally and have a good following on Facebook. Harald was born in Germany and got his education in Germany and Austria. In 1959 he immigrated to Victoria, BC where he continued his profession as a Dental Technician. 1971 he established his own Dental Laboratory and sold it 30 years later. I have been making and selling wood crafts for several years. These include turned bowls, both segmented and solid. I also do some fractal wood burning on some of my bowls. I make edge grain cutting boards in patterned or chaotic pattern. I also make charcuterie boards out of natural wood and wood/epoxy combinations. I am experimenting with other epoxy boards. Depending on time and material availability I also make some furniture, mainly live edge coffee tables and benches.

I am a retired Chemical Oceanographer and contracted out of Ocean Sciences in Pat Bay, B.C. for 25 years. I (Jim Wieshlow) am best known for my oil and acrylic works. I am a retired primary school teacher who traded in her chalk brush for a paintbrush. Since retiring I have taken painting classes and workshops in Victoria and Palm Springs where I spend my winters. I have been a member of SPAC for over 13 years. I have always enjoyed creative pursuits. When I had a younger body I spent many years as a studio modern dancer. Crimson leaves with light shining through is the first colour Robin remembers. A B.C. artist helped her name the shadows and lights fascinating her as a child painter. Through an OFY grant for 7 McGill Architecture students, Robin painted every day for 10 weeks in small towns across Canada. Working as an architect and planner, she sketched in ink and painted every vacation. Painting intensely these last years, first in watercolour, she now paints in acrylic and oils. A lifelong learner, she teaches Value-Colour playshops that explore colour mixing with 6-8 single pigments plus white.

I have been a gourd artist since 2000. I am self-taught. I love to create with colour; I carve, woodburn, and paint. I make figurines, lamps, luminaries, angels, ornaments, bowls and lidded vessels.
